Speed Dating

What is speed dating?

If you are part of the dating scene, you know there isn’t always a lot of time to date and this can make a huge impact on ones social life. There are TV shows and various cities that have “speed dating”. Many people don’t know what speed dating is. Hopefully this article will answer many questions.

Most singles are looking for love and marriage. This is where speed dating comes in. Singles now have the option of dating ten people at one singles event.

Many people can’t imagine such a thing as speed dating. Each date can last approximately six minutes. The main reason why speed dating is so different from the bar scene is that the people that participate in the event all have the same objective which is to meet a life partner.

The Rules

The rules are very simple for speed dating. There are groups of singles that meet at a local café or restaurant. They are given nametags and scorecards. All they need after that is a great personality. The couples are then paired up to start their first date. They are permitted to talk about anything they want except for their jobs and the location of where they live.

The next six minutes of conversation is concluded when a bell rings. This tells the men they must move to meet the next date. It’s similar to musical chairs flirting style.

After each date, all the participants mark their scorecards saying whether they would like to meet that date again. If there is mutual interest, it is noted on the scorecard. The organizers of the speed dating even give each person the other person’s phone number.

How did speed dating originate?

The founder of speed dating is Rabbi Yaacov Deyo. He established this organization in 1999. Speed dating was originally based on the Jewish tradition of chaperoned events for young singles. The original intent was to keep the singles from meeting anyone who was not of the Jewish faith. Speed dating then became increasingly popular and flourished in all communities both secular and Jewish all over the world.

Many singles are tired of hanging out at bars and are tired of blind dates. With speed dating, they have a safe alternative.

How does speed dating work?

Speed dating has become extremely successful. Approximately half of the participants at every event meet several potential matches. There are some that are uncomfortable with the idea of making small talk with several people at one time, however, fans of speed dating firmly believe that while unconventional there is one thing that is conventional and that is the chemistry.

However, there is one question that is always asked. Is six minutes a sufficient amount of time to determine if someone is a potential match? Six minutes can be a rather short amount of time and it’s always possible to pass up someone who might have otherwise been interesting in a more traditional dating scenario.
On the other hand, you might think you met your potential match. However, if you would have had more time you may have discovered the potential match was not a match at all.

No matter which way you look at it the popularity of speed dating is increasing by leaps and bounds. Is speed dating the new trend in relationships or is it just merely a flash in the pan?
